Description:

Inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, the Tony Award-winning Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical is the captivating masterpiece from the Royal Shakespeare Company that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life. With book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin, Matilda has won 47 international awards and continues to thrill sold-out audiences of all ages around the world.

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher Miss Honey. During her first term at school, the two forge a bond as Miss Honey begins to recognize and appreciate Matilda's extraordinary personality. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves to punish those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!

Director's Vision Letter:
Matilda is an iconic piece of pop culture that spans multiple generations.  Roahl Dahl’s work of art was released in 1988 and his characters have been painted in the minds of many since that day.  Lots of us grew up watching Mara Wilson, Rita Pearlman, and Danny DeVito portray the roles of the Wormwood family in the iconic 90s film version.  Some will relate more closely to the staged musical, which made its West End premiere in 2011.  And most recently the Musical Film released by Netflix in 2022, starring Emma Thompson as Trunchbull.  No matter which portrayal you identify with most closely, it is clear that this story is timeless and speaks to many of us.
Me, I’m a kid of the 90s and have many memories of jumping on the couch in my living room with Rusted Root singing  “Send Me On My Way” on the stereo system, as I pretended to make things float and fly around like Matilda.  I watched the movie on repeat.
Roahl Dahl skillfully crafts a balance of light and dark, good and evil, ups and downs.  He is able to weave a tale that speaks to children and shows that we may not always understand God’s plan for us in the moment, but if we give it up to him and trust in that plan he will always lead us to where we are meant to be.
Being that we are a Youth Production, it will be important to be able to distinguish Matilda and her classmates from the adult characters for our production to read to the audience.  If Matilda and Miss Honey are the same stature, that would potentially make it confusing to differentiate the “adult” from the child.
There are many fun roles in this show and there are places for all ages!  Please take a look at the characters list and songs to see how many exciting opportunities there are to appear on stage!  This music is fun and each song has its own personality and style.  Many of the characters have specific physicality to them.  Take some time to study the characters and their personal traits; how they move, interact with others, their likes and dislikes, as well as the styles they sing.  Choose audition pieces that play to your strengths.  You have 2 minutes to shine and show range, levels, texture, emotion, etc.   I like to see 3 distinct characters from your audition 1.  Your Personality in your slate, 2. The character in your song 3. The character in your monologue.  Please choose something in the style of the musical, but not from the musical itself to display your talents.
We are so excited to start this journey with you all and have already started praying for God to lead us in the creation of this production.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Romans 8:28
