Description:

Middle school, ugh. It’s the worst. But Greg is determined not to be at the bottom of the popularity chart. He’ll leave that to his weird neighbor, Fregley. Or maybe Greg’s best friend, Rowley Jefferson. But it’s not going to be Greg…no way.
Jeff Kinney’s popular character takes center stage as Greg’s cartoon diary becomes a hilarious and heartfelt musical. Will Greg’s plans to become popular lead him to sacrifice his one true friend? Can anyone avoid the dreaded Cheese Touch? Grab a hall pass and don’t be late for an adventure familiar to anyone who actually survived middle school.

Director’s Vision Statement:
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical
60-Minute Version

Dear CYT Families and Performers,
I’m so excited to welcome you into the world of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical! This 60-minute adaptation of Jeff Kinney’s iconic book is packed with humor, heart, and a whole lot of relatable middle school mayhem. Told through the voice of Greg Heffley—your average kid just trying to survive the jungle of school hallways—this show is about friendship, family, identity, and the journey to figure out who you are, even when everyone seems to be telling you who to be.
Our story centers on Greg’s quest to rise to the top of the popularity pyramid, but along the way, he discovers something far more meaningful: the importance of loyalty, humility, and staying true to who God made him to be. With Rowley, his goofy best friend; his embarrassing older brother Rodrick; and his loving (if sometimes clueless) family in tow, Greg’s journey is one that will make us laugh, think, and maybe even see ourselves a little more clearly.
Visually, this production will come to life in a totally unique way. Imagine walking into a giant, animated journal—sketches coming off the page, bold cartoon-style sets, and hand-drawn backdrops that make you feel like you’re living inside Greg’s imagination. Our sets will be fun and flexible, using large illustrated flats and platforms that can transform quickly from the school cafeteria to Greg’s bedroom to the chaos of a school play.
Lighting will be dynamic and colorful—each scene designed to reflect Greg’s emotional highs and lows. Expect bright yellows for comedy, deep blues for reflection, and pops of red and orange when things go hilariously wrong (as they often do). Costumes will reflect the exaggerated personalities of our characters—vibrant, playful, and just a little larger-than-life.
But beyond the fun visuals and catchy songs, this show carries a deeper message. At Christian Youth Theater, we believe every story we tell should point back to truth—and Diary of a Wimpy Kid offers a beautiful opportunity to talk with our young performers about identity, grace, and character.
As it says in 1 Samuel 16:7: “People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
This musical reminds us that God isn’t interested in how cool or popular we are—He cares about our character. He wants us to be loving, honest, and authentic, even when that’s hard. And He meets us with grace when we mess up, just like Greg does (a lot!). Greg's journey reminds us that it’s not about being the most liked or having the most followers—God calls us to be kind, humble, and honest. We’re not perfect, and we don’t have to pretend to be. Like Greg, we can learn, grow, and become more of who we’re meant to be—rooted in God’s love, not the world’s approval.
We’re looking for performers who can capture the energy, awkwardness, and heart of this age group with authenticity and fun.
There are plenty of roles that need strong stage presence, comic timing, and maturity to pull off these larger-than-life characters. Whether you're a returning CYT student or jumping in for the first time, this is the show to join if you're ready to laugh hard, work hard, and make unforgettable memories!
To all our young actors: if you’ve ever felt awkward, uncertain, overlooked, or just plain goofy—this show is for you. Whether you’re a seasoned performer or brand new to the stage, Diary of a Wimpy Kid offers a place for every kind of kid to shine. It’s fast-paced, funny, full of heart, and most of all—it’s yours to bring to life.
We can’t wait to create something amazing with you. So grab your backpack, your journal, and your Zoo-Wee Mama spirit—and sign up! This is one middle school adventure you’ll never forget.

In Christ,
Hannah Yeates
