Description:

Inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, the Tony Award-winning Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical is the captivating masterpiece from the Royal Shakespeare Company that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life. With book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin, Matilda has won 47 international awards and continues to thrill sold-out audiences of all ages around the world.

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other's lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda's extraordinary personality. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!

Characters:

Matilda Wormwood

  • Samantha Kerne
A five year old mischievous misfit of her self absorbed family. Unlike the rest of her family, she loves to learn and read. She has a vivid imagination and loves spending time with Mrs. Phelps, the local librarian. When she starts school it is clear to her teacher, Ms. Honey, that she is special. This role requires a lot of stamina and vocal agility. The actor should be able to use all of her ranges and have good dynamic control. A demanding role that requires all around stamina. Physically the actor should appear younger.

Miss Agatha Trunchbull

  • D'Artagnan Elliott
Comedic Character Role- May be cast as a male or female. Trunchbull is a dominate and intimidating character that rules by fear. As principal, fear is the leading tactic employed by her to keep the children in line. The Trunchbull is as physically intimidating as she is a bully. The Trunchbull’s proudest moment is holding the title of England’s Hammer Throwing Champion, 1969. This character should tower above the others and appear surprisingly agile for their size.

Miss Honey

  • Madeline Driver
Ms Honey is as sweet as her name. A dainty and mild mannered young woman. She is a 23 year old teacher at Crunchem Hall. She adores her students and takes a special interest Matilda and her considers her “different”. She is just as intimidated by Trunchbull as the children. The role requires the ability to move through different ranges vocally (a good mix and head voice are ideal).

Mr. Wormwood

  • Zachary Bricken
Comedic Character Role- The father of Matilda, and a crooked car salesman. He is always wheeling and dealing trying to make a quick buck. He has two sides to his personality, depending on who he is dealing with. The actor needs to be able to flip back and forth between sweet and charming, to abrasive and rude. The actor needs to be prepared to carry a scene and work the audience as he has a monologue and energetic song. Requires good stamina and comedic timing.

Mrs. Wormwood

  • Maddie Reid
Comedic Character Role- A hopeful contestant in the ballroom dancing arena (needs to be able to pick up choreography and be comfortable with partner dances), and Matilda's mom. She is loud in every way, from her clothes and makeup to the volume of her conversations. She is over the top. The role requires the ability to move through various ranges vocally (belt/chest, mix, and head). Requires physical, vocal and acting stamina.

Michael Wormwood

  • Aidan Rivers
Matilda’s older brother. A loaf of a boy. He is always watching tv or on an electronic device, which he never looks away from. He very rarely acknowledges or engages with others. Mr and Mrs Wormwood view his as the golden child.

Bruce

  • Stephen Guerra
Has a love of all things sweet and cannot resist, even if it means getting himself into trouble with the Trunchbull. Needs to be a strong singer, able to carry his own melodic line over the rest of the chorus.

Lavender

  • Elise Driver
Matilda’s Classmate and best friend. An exceptionally small girl. Very gutsy. Must be able to deliver a monologue well.

Escapologist

  • Hudson Railey
A great showman. He knows what it takes to keep a crowd anticipating what comes next. He is pained by his wife’s sadness and equally heart broken by the fact that they are unable to have a child. They tempt danger as a way of dealing with their sadness. (A combination of what Matilda wishes she had for a father and what she imagines Miss Honey’s father to have been like)

Sergei

  • Hudson Railey
Russian Mafia Boss. Needs a Russian Accent. In cahoots with Mr. Wormwood and a deal goes bad.

Acrobat

  • SaraMarie Wojta
A character out of one of Matilda’s stories. She is beautiful but tormented by the fact that she cannot seem to achieve the one thing she wants more than anything, a child. She and her husband, the Escapologist, chase danger as a way of coping with their sadness. A lovely soprano voice. (A combination of the what Matilda wishes she had for a mother and what she imagine’s Miss Honey’s mother to have been like.)

Rudolpho

  • Jacob Campbell
Mrs. Wormwood’s ballroom dance partner. Over the top. Extra.

Amanda Thripp

  • Audrey Criss
The little girl with the pigtails. She is a member of Miss Honey’s class that has an unfortunate playground run in with The Trunchbull.

Nigel

  • Pierson Criss
Matilda’s Classmate. Often speaks before thinking. Prone to panic attacks. Needs good comedic timing. The actor needs to be willing to be over the top at times.

Eric

  • Ryan Berry
A member of Miss Honey’s class.

Alice

  • Ella Reed
Matilda’s classmate. A member of Miss Honey’s class

Hortensia

  • Grace Nichols
Loves trying to intimidate the little kids. A bit of a bully. Loves to pull pranks.

Hortensia (School Day Show)

  • Lola Dumlao

Tommy

  • Kai Desel
A member of Miss Honey’s class.

Children’s Entertainer

  • Hayley Ming
This character is full of energy and loves being an entertainer. Party and Magic Tricks would be an excellent bonus for this character to have.

Mrs. Phelps

  • Kaitlyn Whitmore
The local librarian. Adores Matilda. She has a vivid imagination and loves envisioning Matilda’s stories coming to life. She is in awe of the little girl’s maturity and ability to soak up knowledge.

Acrobat's Sister/Aunt

  • Caitlyn Nordeen
A vile woman who cannot find it within herself to be happy for others around her. She is filled with envy and jealousy. (A parallel to Miss Trunchbull/Mr Wormwood in real life)

Acrobat Sister/Aunt (School Day Show)

  • Morgan Yovanovich

Telly

  • SaraMarie Wojta
A tap dancing TV that joins Mr. Wormwood and Michael on stage for "All I Want"

Doctor

  • Travis Driver
This character drives the scene with lots of energy. Does not understand the Wormwood family and feels pity for the beautiful little girl that has to go home with this terrible family. A performer that can sing.
