Description:

The ever-curious Alice’s journey begins innocently enough as she chases the White Rabbit.  Her adventures become increasingly more strange as she races the Dodo Bird, gets tied up with Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, raps with a bubble-blowing Caterpillar and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game!

Due to current Open Texas rules on COVID-19 protocols for Fine Arts Performance Halls and Patrons, staff and patrons are required to wear protective masks at all times while attending performances.

By purchasing this ticket, each individual patron acknowledges and assumes the risk of contact with individuals while in attendance at a CYT Houston performance.

Director Vision Statement:

Dearest CYT Family,
I am utterly thrilled to Direct and Choreograph Alice in Wonderland this Spring. We are going to have so much fun falling down the rabbit hole together!

Lewis Carrol was an eccentric Englishman who took great joy in creating fanciful worlds chock full of nonsense! No really, Alice in Wonderland is technically considered "Literary Nonsense!" I am interested in creating a show full of fanciful nonsense with no shortage of heart and a heaping helping of learning to express the inner "Fabulosity" that resides within us all.

I see our Wonderland as a topsy turvy world full of big personalities and wild ideas! I would encourage those who plan on auditioning, to go full out. Wonderland brings out and celebrates the glorious madness in its inhabitants, the artistic team wants to see your biggest and most outlandish side at auditions. We want you to feel comfortable to be your truest self, choose audition material that makes your heart happy and showcases your strengths, then come put on a show!

The Wonderland we're going to build together doesn't follow our world's usual patterns of function and expectation. This means, in terms of casting, the artistic team is resisting any notion of conformity to the classic interpretation of these characters. With the exception of Alice, and where the script will allow, we will be considering both male and female casting options. For example, our Mad Hatter could be played by a girl, or our Tweedle Twins could be fraternal. Our show has lots of opportunities to shake things up a little. Boys and Girls both, please let us know on your forms, if you are comfortable playing the opposite gender.

In our show, Alice goes on a journey of discovering the Alice she is, the Alice she was, and the Alice she wants to become. We are all on the same journey in our own way, and sometimes what may feel like an unfortunate fall down the rabbit hole is actually an invitation to discover our truest selves.

Alice in Wonderland is a literary classic with a rich history of retellings and interpretation. I look forward to working with Cast, Families, Crew, and the Artistic Team, to present our own unique interpretation of this beloved story.

I can't wait for you to join us!

Til then,

Hannah Weaver

You will have 2 minutes to shine! The director would like to see a monologue and a song in those 2 minutes.

Masks are required for everyone entering the building and those auditioning. The mask can be removed when delivering the vocal audition. Alice in Wonderland Jr will have closed auditions.

Dance Auditions:  February 26th, 6:15-7:30
Everyone will attend the dance audition. You do not need to prepare anything for the dance audition. The choreographer will teach you a portion of a dance and you will perform this with a group.  Dancers will be distanced and required to wear a face shield or mask during dance auditions.

What to bring to auditions:

  • Bring your audition music downloaded on your own device. We have the adapters to plug in to our speaker. No Bluetooth unless you bring your own speaker pre-paired.

Alice Audition Packet
The deadline to submit the audition packet is February 24th.

What to wear:
Auditioning is like a job interview. It's unnecessary to wear a suit, but don't wear shorts and flip flops. Avoid dressing similarly to a character in the show. For dance auditions, wear something comfortable and appropriate for dancing like athletic shorts and a t-shirt. Most students like to change out of dance attire and freshen up, if their vocal audition time slot is after dance auditions.

Characters:

Alice

Alice, Small Alice and Tall Alice are differently sized versions of the show's titular inquisitive and intrepid young girl. On a journey of self-discovery, the adventurous Alice has the heart of an explorer and instincts of a leader. Even when frustrated or confused, she's awfully charming, so cast an actor who can command the stage. Of the three, Alice carries the heft of the singing solors, so be sure to cast a strong singer for this starring role. Small Alice participates in a few musical numbers that might require good movement and dance skills. Tall Alices appears for a few cameo-style moments. While there are ways to adjust heights of the actors through creative costuming, keeping heights of the actors through creative costuming, keeping track of the actors heights in auditions can help simplify the design of your production. Gender: Female Vocal range top: Eb5 Vocal range bottom: Bb3

Small Alice

Tall Alice

Gender: Female

Cheshire Cat (1,2, and 3)

The Cheshire Cat (1, 2, and 3) is the perpetually grinning narrator of the story, a magical feline who doesn't always agree with itself. Because this role is played by three actors, consider auditioning potentials together to get a sense of their chemistry, but above all, cast charismatic actors who can play mischievous and mysterious to both Alice and the audience. Gender: Any

White Rabbit

The White Rabbit is the fussy royal trumpeter, ever-worried that he is running terribly late. Look for an actor who can exude his nervous energy through constant fidgety movement. Because of his wordy solo, excellent diction is also a plus! Gender: Male Vocal range top: E4 Vocal range bottom: C3

Mad Hatter

The Mad Hatter is the life of the (tea) party and has a penchant for making up rules. Delightfully eccentric, the Mad Hatter has a flair for the theatrical and very little focus. While this role requires a singing solo, the actor can speak-sing if needed, so focus on finding someone who relishes the nonsensical fun of this charismatic character. Gender: Any Vocal range top: Bb4 Vocal range bottom: Bb3

Caterpillar

Caterpillar is Alice's wise and fabulous mentor. In fact, if she had a fairy godmother, this cool Caterpillar would be it. As a triple threat, this soon-to-be butterflu should be played by an actor with the vocal chops, the moves, and the magnetism to woo anyone in Wonderland. Gender: Any Vocal range top: Db5 Vocal range bottom: Ab3

Dodo Bird

The Dodo Bird is the imperious captain of the Queen's Navy, leads the caucus race. Cast an actor with a commanding presence and a suitable singing voice for this soloist. Gender: Any Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: C4

Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum

Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee are twins with an identity crisis and an exhausting enthusiasm for proper manners. Superfluously silly, the Tweedles are a comedy duo a la Abbot & Costello and Laurel & Hardy, so ensure their comic timing and chemistry by auditioning potentials in pairs. Gender: Any Vocal range top: Eb5 Vocal range bottom: C#4

The Flowers

The Flowers (Rose, Petunia, Lily, Violet, Daisy) are a stuck-up group of pleasing perennials. While only five have lines, cast many as you would like to fill out this singing ensemble. Gender: Any Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: B3

March Hare

The March Hare is the Mad Hatter's chummy sidekick, enjoys a good party. Just slightly more rational than the Mad Hatter, the March Hare lets the frenetic Hatter lead the way, while never passing up the chance to play a silly game. Gender: Any Vocal range top: B4 Vocal range bottom: B3

Queen of Hearts

The Queen of Hearts is the hotheaded and overbearing ruler of Wonderland. Cast an actor who can portray this mean monarch with theatrical grandiosity, Gender: Female Vocal range top: Db5 Vocal range bottom: C4

Mathilda

Mathilda is Alice's scholarly sister, has no time for silly games. Cast an actor who can portray both the no-nonsense attitude and the affection of a protective older sister. This role, which only appears in the first and final scenes, can easily double as a Wonderland Character ensemble role if desired. Gender: Female

Doorknob

The Doorknob is the gatekeeper of Wonderland, knowingly encourages Alice to drink the magic potion. Look for an actor with a tendency toward the dramatic who can capture Doorknob's put-upon demeanor. Gender: Any

King of Hearts

The King of Hearts, the Queen's partner, has a timid demeanor until taking expert command of Alice's trial. Since he does not appear until later in the show, he may also double as a different Wonderland Character as needed - just be sure the audience doesn't see his King costume until he enters with the Queen. Gender: Male

Park Kids, Sea Creatures, Royal Cards, Party Guests
