Class Description

In this four-week (11/30, 12/7, 12/14, 1/4) master vocal class, students will prepare pieces for performance in front of the other students and the instructor. The instructor will spend individual time with each performer, giving advice on performance techniques, references to the composer, and revealing points of the music for deeper context/subtext.

Between each class, the students will be expected to continue perfecting their repertoire songs and practicing learned techniques at home.

*This class will not participate as a group in the Showcase, but students may volunteer to perform one of their songs at the Winter Showcase if they desire.

Between each class, students will be expected to do outside work to prepare for each class. This work will be documented in the form of a practice log and written assignments focused on perfecting the music outside of class time.

Students must select and prepare 2-3 pieces of work of a contrasting nature. Their song list must also be submitted to the instructor at least one week before the class begins to allow him/her time to review the material before coaching.

CONTRASTING NATURE - musical selections should vary in tempo, subject matter, and general mood. For example, having a fast, patter-style song paired with a slower air or art song would be ideal.

Acceptable solo musical repertoire includes:
● Musical Theater Solo Repertoire (no duets or ensemble numbers, please)
● Art Songs from the Classic/Romantic/Modern period of Music
● Arias from Operas - any time period (if performing a recitative, you must perform the air that accompanies it)
● Oratorios from Sacred Literature

***One song must be in a foreign language
○ Latin would be acceptable as a foreign language if performing an oratorio
○ There are several art songs in Italian, French, and German
Prerequisite: Students must have taken at least (1) Beginning/Intermediate AND (1) Intermediate/Advanced Vocal Class with CYT, previously.
