Description
Come help bring this beautiful piece of literature to life as we produce a full One-Act Play this session!
Synopsis:
Edward Tulane is an expensive toy rabbit made of china. He is loved by a little girl named Abilene, but Edward doesn’t care. He is vain and self-centered. He has no interest in anyone other than himself. On an ocean voyage, Edward is accidentally thrown overboard and sinks to the bottom of the sea. So begins his journey—a journey over which he has no control, for he is a toy rabbit. He can neither move nor speak.
As years pass by, Edward meets many different people in many different situations: an older grieving couple who find comfort in Edward’s presence, a hobo and his dog who introduce Edward to a whole community of homeless wanderers, a farmer in need of a scarecrow, a sad little boy and his very ill sister, and finally a doll mender and an old doll who teach Edward an invaluable lesson.
Through this miraculous journey, Edward learns what it is to love, what it is to lose that love, and how to find the courage to love again.
Based on Kate DiCamillo’s beautiful novel of the same name, the play is a theatrical tour de force for a small ensemble of actors and musicians.
Project Play classes are different than our standard courses.
1. Project Play classes audition and rehearse a one-act play during the regular class period through the session, but will also have an additional class on Thursday, February 1st, at Klein United Methodist Church in Spring. This will be a dress rehearsal and all classes will have an opportunity to run their show on the stage. It is crucial that ALL students are able to attend that Thursday night class session.
2. All Project Play classes will perform at our ticketed CYT Houston Project Play Festival on FEBRUARY 3rd beginning at 6pm. The Festival will be the culminating performance for all of our Project Play classes and a wonderful chance to celebrate the Straight Play genre of theater together. Registration in this class also includes 2 tickets to the play festival.
3. Project Play classes have a specific maximum number of students based on the script that is being used. Once the class is full, we cannot add more spaces.
To participate in this class you must be committed to participating in the live performance on FEBRUARY 3, 2024.
Class dates for this Project Play class are: November 13, 27
December 4, 11, 18 January 8, 15, 22 NO CLASS ON 1/29 (showcase night for other classes) February 1 - Mandatory Dress Rehearsal at Klein United CLC February 3 - Project Play Festival at Klein United CLC - Tickets will be available online.

Hailey began her theatre journey as a CYT student in 2015, first appearing in the ensemble of Beauty and the Beast Jr. This began a lifelong passion for theatre, and she went on to earn her Bachelor of Music in Musical Theatre from the University of Central Oklahoma. Hailey now works professionally as an actor and theatre educator in the Houston area, and is so excited to be teaching the next generation of CYT students!
